Ham Steak Sandwich

Ingredients

1 cup thinly sliced onions
2 cups sliced mushrooms
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
4 ounces reduced fat Swiss cheese
4 hoagie rolls
4 tablespoons fat free mayonnaise
8 thin slices tomato
1 1/2 pounds of ham steak slices, trim any excess fat
1 tablespoon of Tuscan Herb Olive Oil
¼ cup of Cinnamon Pear Dark Balsamic
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons mustard (wholegrain or Dijon)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon paprika

Preparation

Heat olive oil in a large skillet, and add ham. Cook until browned on both sides (approx 3-5 minutes on each side.). Remove from the pan and keep warm. To the same pan, reduce heat, and add the water, brown sugar, paprika, and balsamic. Cook until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce begins to thicken slightly.  Place ham steaks back into the pan and coat both sides with the caramelized glaze for another 5 minutes. Remove the ham, chop it up into pieces and set aside. Add onions in the same pan, Sauté the onions 2 to 3 minutes or until they begin to soften. Add the mushrooms to the onions and continue to cook until the mushrooms release their juices. Add the ham back in with onions and mushrooms until heated through. Remove from heat and portion out into rolls top how you like with mayonnaise, mustard, cheese slice, tomatoes, and lettuce. Enjoy!
